There have been heated debates about whether women of color (specifically black women) should even consider this chart. My thinking is that you should just love your hair no matter what the texture, but if this chart helps you figure out how to style it, use the chart.
By the way I think I'm a coily/kinky, and I love it! This is me.![]()
Terms Related to Shape
Shape- how each individual hair naturally bends and twists creating coils, curls, kinks or waves
Coily-kinky β locks of hair are curled very tightly into an βoβ shape with a diameter of 1/8β 1/4ββ.
Coily-curly β locks of hair have a defined βoβ shapeβ looped into a corkscrew affect with curly diameter approximately 3/8β and larger
Kinky β locks of hair have a zig-zag βzβ pattern without ever creating the βoβ of Coily hair. The bends are very small and frequent.
Wavy β locks of hair have loose βsβ shape without ever creating the shape of an βoβ. The bends tend to infrequent, only occurring about every 1 inch or greater.![]()

i have the coveted S-curl.. and a few spirals at the nape of my neck. but my hair is pretty damn thick.
2my hair is coily. I blow dry it all the time.
3I think that I have something like lisa25 say, but I'm not shore... they are more than just wavy, but not too curly, maybe a little messy, he he. =] Everyone always asks me -> if I wanted to straight my hair, maybe I should try. But I love my hair, and I would never like to straight them, I love curls, especially when hair is long ^_^
4I'm not sure what mines is :S , it's not coily curly that's for sure (okay well now i'm straighten but going back natural since i do love my hair, it's just that it's toooo darn thick and makes me mad having to deal with it lol) so i'm into locksin' it which is so cool and it actually helps the hair to grow longer. But i guess i'm kinda wavy-kinky-something else lol :S
I am not my hair, i am not the skin, i am not your expectation
5i used to have curly hair but i wear it straight now. i think its easier for me but probably sustains more damage.
6my hair is def coily-kinky (3c/4a); I have crazy thick hair that has a tight S-shape. Im a member of the NaturallyCurly and Long Hair Care Forum and thats all everyone talks about is the texture and shape of their hair! Im currently in the process of transitioning from relaxed hair to natural hair bc I got tired of perms and ceramic irons overprocessing my hair
7My hair is coily-kinky!!! I got rid of my perm when I was 16 and it hasn't been relaxed or chemically processed (including color) since then. That was 16 years ago and I've learned so much since then. It took me a while to realize that relaxed hair and natural hair are cared for very differently. Back in 1993 I didn't know any Black women who didn't have a perm. There was no one to guide me through the process. When I wanted to get my hair trimmed, stylist would cut it into a very masculine style because they didn't understand the look I was going for, and there were very few products for my hair.
My hair likes for things to be simple. I wash it often, and I put virgin coconut oil on it to moisturize it. This method has worked very well for me. At this point I have 7 year old dreadlocks that are about 18 inches long. They have reddish golden highlights from the sun and summers at the beach and pool! I think it's very pretty!
I'll be cutting my locks off soon and I'm excited to see the tiny curls and coils spring up every where!
